Besides Taman Tun, Syabas launched their Phase 1 of their pipe replacement programme at three other venues - Kelana Jaya, Hulu Selangor and Sepang. These areas had been identified as the Most Critical Areas in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. Overall the initial phase of the pipe replacement exercise will include areas in Petaling Jaya, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Sepang, Kuala Lumpur, Shah Alam, Klang, Kuala Selangor, Gombak, Hulu Selangor, Sabak Bernam and Hulu Langat.
This first Phase, scheduled for completion by the end of 2006 will replace more than 835 km of old pipes and at an estimated cost of RM272 million. Syabas Executive Chairman, Tan Sri Dr. Rozali Ismail was on hand in Taman Tun to officially launch the Programme. The Chairman of the TTDI Residents' Association, Hj. Abdul Latib Mohd Som and members of the EXCO were invited to witness the launch.
The critical areas are those where the pipes are between 30 and 40 years old, making them prone to breakage, and reducing water quality and pressure. The residents were informed that the old pipes will be replaced with new ductile iron pipes. The replacement programme will solve both the "dirty water" problem as well as reducing water loss or leakage to a manageable level of 20% from the present 40%.
The public will be informed of work to be carried out via media advertisements. Residents affected by the disruptions caused by the pipe replacement can contact PUSPEL, the customer Service Centre at 1-800-88-5252 for more information.
